I started these in 2014 teaching drawing for Mercer University’s Philosophy and Art, Study Abroad program in Greece. While at the Athenian Agora, under an olive tree, I was struck by the play of shadows being cast on the paper. I traced the forms and values with charcoal, and the series was started. I’ve executed dozens more, some of them 5 feet tall. There is work from far away and as close as my backyard. They are like rubbings from on an old monument, a memory of light and shadow.
